Sally Mann Recreations.

Each of these images i have taken, i have highly edited the saturation, softness and tones to resemble the style and signature atmosphere of Sally Mann's famous 'Immediate Famliy' album taken of her 3 younger children.
I have used my cousin's, Loke and Jianna as subjects to stay in touch with the 'family' theme. I have mainly taken photo's of Jianna as Mann's collection is mostly made up of young girls with fewer male images.
Sally used a film camera, yet i used my SLR, editing to create the film-like atmosphere, with shadows and imperfections.
I have also made each and every photograph black and white to again, mimic Mann's spooky atmospheric style.

Conceal & Reveal.

For these images I used a spot light to create a strong separation between light and dark.
The lamp enabled me to carefully reveal certain parts of my subjects face and conceal others in the dark.
I used obsure angles to capture purposely chosen features and certain parts of the face more clearly than others.

Focus played a large role in this 'conceal and reveal' task.
I used the camera's focus to pick out and clearly 'reveal' certain, main features and 'conceal' parts of the face and body that is did not want to appear so promenant in my photograph.

I was sure to keep main facial features such as the eyes, mouth and nose as clear and focused as possible as i believe they reveal a lot about a person.

I found that when unfocusing for certain angles of the face it made the subject appear a lot more mysterious and helped to 'conceal' their personailty and identity.

Here I used the models own hair as a tool in concealing most of his face.

Here I used the camera focus to gain full attention onto the model's eye which I believe is the feature that mostly 'reveals' emotion on the face. The focus also 'conceals' other parts of the face that may distract.

Conceal & Reveal.

The idea behind these images is through the theme of 'Conceal and Reveal'.
Half on the model's face is 'concealed' by another photo, held in his hand. However, the idea is that the photo held by the model 'reveals' a part of their life through another past image.

Crooked Teeth

Whilst passing through Brick Lane in London, a musician caught my eye.
His unique style through music as well as his foreign appearance makes for a great photo. The run down wall and brick structure come together nicely and add to the man's mystique.

Bramble.

I took advantage of an elderly family cat to get up close and personal. The objective being to capture clear, colourful images showing off the beauty of a feline.

Portrait.

I believe photographing faces and beings when they are oblivious is the most effective way of capturing personality and mood.

Eye to Eye.

I took an unusual opportunity to come face to face with another creature, known for its timid nature.
These photo's were taken through a glass door and i kept zoom to a minimal to optimise chances of a clear take. Crawling towards the animal without scaring it away was a great challenge, but i'm proud of the result.

Fox-glove.

One Hundered Faces Forgotten.

The idea that each cigarette was left in the same place by a different being and character truly interests me. Behind each cigerette or piece of litter lies the person who placed it there, a different personality, face and life story. Though when passing by this ash tray would only appear to be full of unwanted litter, soon to be cleared away and forgotten.

Family Values.

My particular interest within photography lies with the capturing of faces, emotion and relationships. I took advantage of a recent holiday to Georgia USA where i was surrounded by close family. This gave me the opportunity to capture a varitey of faces portraying many expressions and emotions. What especially interests me is the story behind the face whether it is stated or left as a mystery. Every face tells a story and my objective is to capture this through expression.
